Research and Development Funding

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology (STTR)

The SBIR program, sponsored by 10 federal agencies, is a highly successful program which spends over $1.5 billion on technology research annually. The program's purpose is to develop and commercialize new technologies that enable the U.S. to maintain its technological competency for defense readiness.

Through this program, small technology businesses can secure up to $850,000 in federal funding for research and development projects. They can then leverage those funds into partnerships with research institutions, universities and manufacturers to commercialize new technologies.

Businesses compete for:

  • Phase I (Feasibility) = $100,000
  • Phase II (Proof of Concept) =$750,000

Criteria:

  • Small business (under 500 employees)
  • For-profit
  • 51% ownership by U.S. Citizen
  • Independently owned and operated
  • All research conducted within the U.S.A.

Small businesses retain their intellectual property rights and are encouraged to commercialize their technologies.

This program offers technology businesses an incredible opportunity to access government funding for research and development — to learn about government contracting in a user-friendly environment — and identify other sources of government funding.
